New Overpass will Connect Mokelumne Trail in Brentwood

March 23, 2017

Brentwood has been growing and changing, with more commercial and housing developments in the works or being proposed. With population growth comes more traffic, and the need to address transportation options and concerns. This includes pedestrians and cyclists. At a recent Brentwood City Council meeting, approval was voted on for a new overpass which will not only improve the overall infrastructure of future public transit projects, but help those on foot and bike stay safer, too.

As recently reported by the East Bay Times, Brentwood will have a new overpass built across State Route 4 which will connect both sides of the Mokelumne Trail. This is a big plus for pedestrians and cyclists who utilize the trail extensively. The overpass will also aid in encouraging greater use of public transit, as currently there is no easy access to East County from Brentwood.

The decision to move forward with the new overpass was also made, in large part, to help support future transit stations, including in Brentwood and Antioch, which have been suggested by the latest BART New Segment Survey. This area is growing in economy and population, and there is a clear need to support a variety of transportation and recreation options.

By connecting the two parts of the trail which are split by State Route 4, the trail will also be one step closer towards becoming a fully completed trail, which has been in progress for almost 30 years. When finished, there will be a continuous trail where hikers and cyclists can experience this region of California from the Pacific coast to the Sierra Crest.

Brentwood and East Contra Costa County have a lot to offer; the new Mokelumne Trail overpass will help make enjoying the region a better experience.
