Contra Costa County has a wide variety of amazing parks and natural areas, many of which are a part of the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD). With over 65 parks and 1,250 miles of trails, nature lovers and health enthusiasts have their fair choice of some incredible landscapes to explore. Each year the park district offers a Trails Challenge, encouraging visitors to enjoy the trails.

The Trails Challenge is comprised of a logbook and guide, which can be downloaded on EBRPD Trails Challenge page. Once you have your guide in hand, you are then challenged to complete your log book through a minimum of five different trails at various parks, or to sojourn through a total of 26.2 miles on these trails in 2017. Those that meet the challenge by the end of November, can turn in their log books to receive a commemorative pin.

Trails in the 2017 challenge include the Marsh Creek Trail in Brentwood, the Martinez Regional Shoreline, and Bishop Ranch Reserve in San Ramon. All the trails are open to pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians and dogs; and many of them are also wheelchair accessible, allowing for most anyone to take on the challenge.

2017 marks the 24th year of the EBPRD Trails Challenge. This is a self-guided challenge that works on the honor system, and is ultimately a fun way to encourage more time spent in our regional parks. The Trails Challenge also encourages a healthier lifestyle as part of the National Healthy Parks Healthy People Movement. If you needed an excuse to return to a favorite park or discover a new trail, this is it.
