HALO- Helping Pets in East Contra Costa County

February 9, 2017

Anyone who knows me, knows I am an animal lover. Pets especially bring us so much love and joy when we have them in our lives. With our cats and dogs, we make heart-felt connections. We not only care for our furry friends, they care for us in return, and our lives are made better for having them around. It’s been awhile since I posted about the incredible organizations we have in the region, which help animals, and people both. One of my favorite groups that does a wonderful job with programs for East Contra Costa County, is Homeless Animals Lifeline Organization, or HALO, as it is commonly known.

HALO is the oldest regional organization for the East County, already helping place over 10,000 cats and dogs of all breeds in new homes. This all-volunteer group has some incredible programs to help rescue animals, and educate adults and children alike, when it comes caring for our pets. Working with local city and county programs and area shelters, HALO provides direct assistance with pet adoptions alongside their educational programs.

HALO’s programs help our communities in a variety of ways. The Angel Ears, Therapy Dog animal-1836631_640Program works with rescue dogs and those in need of therapy animals. One big success has been their READ program as a part of Angel Ears, which helps children become better readers. The Feral Cat Network helps not only with humanely taking in feral cats, but also helps to education the public about the impacts an overpopulation of feral cats have. If you find yourself with an unexpected litter of kittens which you can’t keep, HALO can help you with the process of finding them homes. The Little Trooper Fund was set up to help cats and dogs with urgent medical care, and is a valuable resource for many pets and their humans alike.

If you are not in a position to adopt a pet, you can still help HALO help others. Their big annual fundraiser takes place in the fall, as an annual golf tournament. Volunteers are needed throughout the year. As this is how the organization is run, anyone who wants to help can find a way to do just that. From donations, to animal foster parents, or joining one of the programs, anyone can make a difference.
