Having access to quality educational institutions is one of the top features many homebuyers look for when it comes to purchasing property. The bay area has a variety of communities with top-notch schools, but one community college stands out above the rest. The Aspen Institute, a leading educational and policy organization, has recently announced the latest nominees in their prestigious Aspen Prize for Excellence among community colleges. 150 of the nation’s best community colleges have been selected as finalists for this honor, which is also worth $1 million. Los Medanos College in Pittsburg is one of the Aspen Prize nominees.

02.16.2016._2The Aspen Prize is awarded every two years and recognizes high performance and achievement within community colleges based on specific criteria. There are four elements, which are measured:

  • Student Learning
  • Certificate & Degree Completion
  • Employment & Earnings
  • Access & Success for Minority and Low-Income Students

There are three rounds to the bi-annual Aspen Prize. The first round was just completed with the naming of the 150 nominees. These were culled from over 1,000 public two-year schools across the country. Just getting to round one is an honor in itself. This round is based upon having high levels of student success within persistence, awarded degrees, program completions and transfers. These levels must show improvement over time and show equitable success for students of all backgrounds. Round two will be ongoing into the fall and will consist of visits to each college by Aspen Institute representatives and a review of applications submitted by the finalists. Ten finalists will be chosen in the fall. Round three consists of the $1 million award being announced in 2017.

Community colleges provide an accessible and more affordable option to gain additional education toward whatever career students pursue. To know that we have a high-caliber college available in our area is a big plus not only for the students, but for the community at large.
