Holiday Fun with Community

December 2, 2015

HolidayFunThe Holiday Season is one of my favorite times of year. There are gatherings of all kinds happening everywhere you look. People put away their differences to meet in the spirit of the holidays, to celebrate the good things in life, like family and friends. All across the nation, there will be communities doing things together, helping one another and sharing time and experiences. Here in Contra Costa County it is no different. We have so many events going on, it can be overwhelming deciding what to do. In the towns throughout Contra Costa, there is a strong sense of connection which brings out the best in everyone as residents, businesses and non-profits support community at large together. I have compiled a list of some of the things you can enjoy this holiday season.

Holiday lights brighten up dark nights. No matter how you celebrate the season, holidays lights warm the spirit and put a smile on your face. There are several holiday tree lighting ceremonies throughout Contra Costa County. Danville has its own take with the Lighting of the Old Oak Tree in downtown on November 27th at 5:00 pm. In Pleasanton on December 2nd there is a holiday festival surrounding the lighting of their big tree in downtown. From 5:00 – 8:00 there is a craft fair, carriage rides, a scavenger hunt for the kids and much more. The town of Moraga will offer up cookies and cocoa when they light their tree on December 3rd at 6:30 in Commons Park. Brentwood lights its tree on December 4th at City Park starting at 6:00 pm. Oakley gets festive with games and activities before they light the holiday tree. Head over to the Civic Plaza Center on December 5th at 4:00 pm for an afternoon of family fun. Winterfest at Pinole includes not only the tree lighting ceremony but also live performances, holiday treats, kid’s activities and arts and crafts fair. The fest takes place at different locations around town, bringing the whole community together on December 6th starting at 2:00 pm. Rounding out our tree lighting fun in Contra Costa is Hercules, where they will light their community holiday Tree on December 6th at the Hercules Community Center. There will be fun for the whole family and a chance to donate canned goods or clothes for those in need.

There are other wonderful Holiday events worth checking out beyond tree lightings. One of the most popular events in the county will be on December 5th in San Ramon. I am talking about the Bah Humbug! 5k Walk/Run. There is a great contest for the zaniest costume every year, and it is worth watching just for this part. Food donations are also encouraged as part of the run. For some great family time with the young ones, both Oakley and Hercules offer a special Breakfast with Santa on December 12th. Santa will be in Oakley at 10:00 am, and in Hercules all morning long starting at 8:30 am. The Oakley breakfast includes a kids craft and children get a small gift to take home. In Hercules, breakfast is part of a fundraiser for the Senior Center & Teen Youth Council.

If you live in or near Antioch there is a special way you can connect with community a bit different the standard holiday offerings. This year marks the 66th Annual Antioch Neighborhood Clean Up Day. This year’s cleanup will be on December 5th at Prewett Family Park from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. The Antioch Police, Neighborhood Watch Program, police and public works volunteers put this community wide event together for everyone to be able to help take care of and enjoy clean neighborhoods. Lafayette is home to an amazing holiday shopping experience with Santa’s Bag. Over 60 local artisans will have booths filled with their arts and crafts just waiting for you to find that perfect gift for someone special. This year’s arts and crafts fair is being held from December 6th-8th at the Lafayette Community Center.

However you choose to celebrate the holidays, I hope you and your family have a wonderful time filled with joy and peace. Living in Contra Costa with such wonderful communities around makes it easy revel in the holiday spirit.
