Basic Maintenance Keeps Home Sell-able

May 27, 2008

When you decide to put your home on the market, many things must take place, but here are two things to keep in mind before you sell. Consider getting a home inspection now and make needed repairs and improvements based on your inspectors report. Typically the buyer would order and pay for a home inspection, but it will cost you less to nip problems in the bud now, rather than rushing to make repairs or negotiating with the buyer while you are in contract. Also, think about getting a pest inspection as well. Problems such as termites and dry rot can wreak havoc on your house in a very short period of time. After your inspections you can prioritize the needed repairs and plan to work on them over a period of time or shop for a contractor or handyman to take care of them for you without the pressure of closing the sale.

Finally, aim to keep up with regular repairs and maintenance by scheduling them on your calendar. For instance, check your sprinkler system around the middle of March to make sure it’s working well when the rains taper off, and clean your gutters out monthly starting in October or November. These simple steps can save you both money and headaches.
